San Francisco’s famous photojournalist Zombie covered the Walk for Life this year. On February 14, Zombie also covered the “One Billion Rising” demonstration, also held at Civic Center Plaza.

His coverage gave an excellent exposure of media bias. Here are some of his photos, with his commentary:

“A little lesson in photo editing:

From the stage, at a certain angle, one could take a photo encompassing the entire crowd, making it look pretty big.

Even from the front of the crowd looking toward the back, it can be made to appear like a sea of people (and note all the media on the platform to the left).

But walk to the back of Civic Center Plaza, and take a picture from a distance, and my oh my, it certainly seems like a small event!

See how deceptive photos can be, even when they’re showing “reality”? Editors can choose which reality they want to show.

So, how many people were there? I’m terrible at crowd estimates, so I couldn’t really say, but if forced to guess, I’d venture two thousand or so.

That may seem like a lot, but it felt tiny compared to the 50,000 protesters who had congregated at this exact spot just a couple weeks ago at the Walk for Life rally.”

Here we add a photo of the Walk for Life West Coast, taken from more or less the same angle but further back, by Dennis Callahan:

Back to Zombie: “Of course, massive media showed up to cover yesterday’s 2,000-strong left-wing rally, but there was practically no media on hand at all to cover the vastly larger conservative rally. Par for the course.

This is the sneaky side of media bias: deciding what to emphasize, and what to ignore. Everything they say in the newspaper may indeed be true; but it’s the truths they don’t tell you that are important.”

Wade in San Francisco.

At the rally preceding the Jan. 26 walk, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, named the Pope’s personal representative to the U.S. in October 2011, read Pope Benedict XVI’s blessing to the crowd of 50,000 pro-lifers gathered at the city’s Civic Center Plaza. Then, the nuncio told his enthusiastic audience, “I feel with you that you are the best of the United States of America.”

Archbishop Viganò’s appearance at the walk prompted an expression of gratitude from San Francisco’s newly installed Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone. The nuncio told the Register that he has sought out opportunities to familiarize himself with the Church in the United States.

“One of the duties of the mission of the apostolic nuncio and his staff is to provide and offer [information] to the Pope about the situation of the Church in the United States and to present to him suitable candidates to be bishops,” Archbishop Viganò said.

“This is a very important responsibility, and, since the country is so large, I try to be present at any occasion or for an important meeting.”

Very nice! The Gospel Herald is an international publication of the Chinese Christian community with an enormous readership.

50,000 Pro-Lifers Walk for Life in San Francisco

“SAN FRANCISCO, California – In a beautiful, sunny Saturday afternoon, an estimated crowd of 50,000 people marched in front of the San Francisco’s City Hall, marking the ninth year that Walk for Life West Coast has been held. Protesters held signs that supported their undaunted message of pro-life.

This year is the 40th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion. Community leaders and pro-life activists proclaimed their belief in the sanctity of life and vouched for the rights of every unborn child through their messages and testimonies, reaching the hearts of thousands of people both old and young.”

The article also quoted our friend Dr. Evelyn Li, leader of Asian Americans Pro Life:

“Dr. Evelyn Li, representative of Asian American for Life told The Gospel Herald about the abortion’s hazardous effects towards women based on medical statistics.

“Women who had abortion and suffer from depression has two to four times the mortality rate than those who did not in the following ten years. Because abortion is an ultra-unnatural procedure, women who had abortion would have a higher chance of contracting illnesses and other side-effects. If pregnant again, the chances of miscarriage would be increased,” said Li.
